One of the five aspects of a typical Business Mission Trip is “Business Visitations”. This is a very enjoyable part of every trip because the participants get to go “inside” the business and see how things “really work”. The visits are normally about 1 hour and it is a great time for the participants to learn and share in a one-on-one setting.
Coffee Shop and Restaurant in Guatemala: Maria lives in Quetzaltinango, Guatemala and has owned her business for more than 10 years. Her parents raised coffee beans and this has helped her in many of the technical skills. Owning the business has not been an easy journey. With 15 employees, one of the difficult things to overcome has been teaching the native workers about “customer service”. Maria is involved in the total process of the business: purchasing the coffee beans from local farmers, roasting & blending the beans in her shop, and serving a menu of food and pastries for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maria’s son helps her each Saturday to roast the coffee beans in this automated roasting and drying unit. They have a lot of capacity to increase their production. Plans are in the works to add an “espresso” service for those that want a quick cup of coffee.
The basket on the left has bags of coffee beans that are privately labeled. Maria discusses possibilities with Shauna Shotton about exporting these “select” coffee blends.
Missionary Jack Colson is discussing with Maria about ways to train the native workers on the importance of “customer service” in the coffee shop.
The coffee shop and restaurant has continued to grow in size and profit.
We can pray and thank God for the “diligence” shown by Maria for her business: Proverbs 21:5 “The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenty; but the thoughts of everyone who is hasty only to poverty”
It is our desire and prayer that the Christian businesspeople of Guatemala see that God has called them to a very important role within the Body of Christ and that they will have the wisdom to see that calling and walk in it. We desire to come along side of these people to encourage them and assist them in being used of God to reach their countries for Christ.
